Description: The number of LGBTQIA+ individuals who voluntarily share their gender identity increases every day. As awareness and visibility increases, individuals will continue to reveal their true selves. LGBTQIA+ patients struggle with barriers and fears that physician office practices and healthcare systems are often unaware exist. Many practices and healthcare systems receive little if any training on how to provide the best patient journey and how to minimize the associated risks. This presentation emphasizes the importance of physician and staff education, includes best practices, and discusses ways to mitigate discrimination risks. 

Objectives: This educational activity will support your ability to:

  • Identify definitions and terms used in the LGBTQIA+ community
  • Report best practices when working with LGBTQIA+ patients
  • Document ways to prevent and eliminate discrimination in the workplace

Target Audience

All physicians, advanced practice professionals, staff, and administrators.

Course Faculty

Dr. Kristie Overstreet holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Sexology, a Masters of Arts in Professional Counseling, and a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology. She is a licensed counselor in California, Florida, Georgia, and Louisiana. She is also a certified sex therapist and certified addiction professional. She is president of the Therapy Department, a private practice in Orange County that provides counseling, training, speaking, and consulting services. She also serves as a national contributor to CNN, Psychology Today, Readers Digest, Your Workplace, Women’s Health, Men’s Health, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, and various other media. 

Dr. Kristie is an internationally recognized speaker for associations, hospitals, and TEDx. As a trainer, she created the Transgender Healthcare Dignity Model training and certification program for medical and behavioral health providers.
