  • Be careful about speculation – statements about what might have caused a situation could impact your credibility if they are wrong.
  • Do not point fingers or blame other physicians or staff members.
  • Do not overwhelm the patient/family with information; pace the conversation accordingly.
  • Do not lose control of your emotions. It may be infuriating to have someone falsely accusing you of having caused a situation, but losing your cool hurts your credibility.
