Program Description: 

This program addresses common challenges faced by physicians and other prescribers who manage patients with acute and chronic pain or treat substance use disorders. This activity reviews potential approaches to opioid-based pharmacology and opioid therapy. Join us as faculty members discuss the risks of opioid treatment, provide practical and applicable insights to safely manage patients, and assist in navigating the complexities of agency regulations and guidelines. 

Objectives: This enduring educational activity will support your ability to:

  • Identify and mitigate the primary risks associated with prescribing opioid medications. 
  • Evaluate current processes and incorporate best practice guidelines. 
  • Apply risk reduction strategies to reduce potential patient harm and professional liability claims.

All physicians, advanced practice professionals, staff, and administrators.

Course Faculty

Daniel M. Doleys, PhD

Dr. Doleys is the director of The Doleys Clinic in Birmingham, Alabama. He has held this position since its inception in November 1979. Prior to starting in private practice, he was a full-time faculty member in the Department of Psychology/Psychiatry, School of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham as an associate professor.

He received his PhD in Psychology in 1973 from the University of Miami in Florida, after which he completed a two-year clinical postdoctoral fellowship in Behavioral Therapy and Analysis at the University of Georgia. Dr. Doleys is a member of several professional associations, including the American Psychological Association, American Pain Society, the International Association for the Study of Pain, American Academy of Pain Medicine, and the Southern Pain Society (past president and board member). 

Boyde J. (Jerry) Harrison, MD

Dr. Harrison is a rural family practice physician in Haleyville, Alabama where he also maintains an active nursing home practice. After receiving a bachelor’s degree from Birmingham-Southern College and completing graduate work at Tulane University, Dr. Harrison attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine. He then completed postgraduate training at Georgia Baptist Medical Center.

Dr. Harrison is a past board member of the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners and the Medical Association of the State of Alabama and is past president of the Board of Censors of the Medical Association. He also serves on the board of the Alabama Academy of Family Physicians and is a founding member of the Alabama Medical Directors Association.

Hernando Carter, MD

Dr. Carter is a primary care physician and a market medical director with ArchWell Health in Birmingham. He received his medical degree from UAB Heersink School of Medicine and completed his internal medicine residency with Baptist Health System.

Dr. Carter is a board member of the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners, the Medical Association of the State of Alabama, and the Alabama Department of Public Health. Dr. Carter is also the Founder, CEO, and President of Prescription for Better Living, a nonprofit organization created for the promotion of health equity.
